The low down
Cosmelan® treatment is ideal for anyone concerned with pigmentation, melasma, sun damage and hyperpigmentation caused from acne. It is safe to be performed at any time of year, on new or stubborn pigment deposits, all ages and skin colours.
The number of required Cosmelan® treatment sessions depends on each individual client and their expectations. Generally, visiting our clinic once for the treatment should be enough if you commit to the at-home skincare regime. Your therapist can let you know if you require additional treatment.
There is little to no pain associated with this treatment. The following 5 days post treatment you may experience some, redness, heat, tightness and irritation.
Following your peel, you are expected to see fading, reduction or disappearance of melanin-based spots after 1 month of treatment. Your skin will be left renewed, brighter, and healthier looking from the 2nd week of treatment.
Directly following the treatment some swelling and moderate redness, peeling/flaking of the full face, stinging and tightness and moderate discomfort can be expected.
In the following two weeks, you will also notice the lightening of melanin concentration on your face.

Essential to prepare your skin 4 weeks prior to treatment.
- To prep the skin we highly advise having a lactic peel, a light Microdermabrasion or Exfoliating Peel is recommended 2 weeks prior to the treatment.
- Ensure you are applying a broad-spectrum SPF daily and no sunburn to the area.
- Consult your doctor for an antiviral if you are prone to cold sores.
- 5 days prior to your treatment requirements:
- No vitamin A / retinol.
- No physical / chemical exfoliating
- Plenty of hydration minimum 2L p/day.
- Plenty of hyaluronic acid and moisture.
During the treatment, the skin will be prepped with an oil-removing solution to allow even penetration of the peel. Tingling and a strong smell is expected.
The thick, clay-coloured cosmelan® 1 mask will be applied and must be left on at home for a period of 8-12 hours. The duration will be dependent on Fitzpatrick type and skin condition. During the treatment, whilst the mask is on, a non-active water mist will need to be used to keep the product moist (not wet) to ensure it does not dry out. This product can be purchased at most chemists.
Once the mask has been left on for the desired time, it will need to be completed but gently removed at home using room-temperature water and fibrella wipes, these will be provided by the clinic. Once removed, a small amount of cosmelan® recovery is to be applied and allowed to dry before bed.
Day of application & long term aftercare plan.

- Strong Erythema, Moderate Heat, Swelling and Itching, Mild flaking in the first week of treatment.
- No lines & wrinkles or facial volume & definition treatments to the area for 3 months.
